About Gemstone
Can Gemstones Fade?
Yes — and it has nothing to do with age. Fading is the result of environmental exposure. Understanding the cause is the first step to protecting your investment.
What causes fading:
- Sunlight (UV Exposure): Natural stones are light-sensitive. Prolonged direct sunlight alters their atomic structure, causing permanent color loss. High-risk stones include Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, Aquamarine, Fluorite, and Kunzite.
- Heat: Extreme temperatures destabilize the trace elements responsible for a stone's color, resulting in dullness or unwanted shade shifts.
- Chemicals: Daily contact with perfumes, lotions, sunscreens, and cleaning agents can erode a stone's surface and crystal lattice — stripping its natural luster over time.
- Dyed Stones: Beads enhanced with dye will fade significantly faster than untreated, naturally colored stones.
Can Gemstones Chip?
Yes — and it comes down to two properties: hardness (resistance to scratching) and toughness (resistance to breaking).
What causes chipping:
- Mohs Scale: Most jewelry gemstones fall between 3–7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Softer stones like Lapis Lazuli (5–6), Turquoise (5–6), and Malachite (3.5–4) are more vulnerable to surface wear. Even harder stones like Amethyst, Citrine, and Rose Quartz (7+) can chip along internal fracture or cleavage planes.
- Friction: Storing bracelets loosely alongside other jewelry allows beads to rub together — causing micro-chips and a dull, matte finish over time.
How to Care for Your E-Monae Jewels
Every piece is crafted with intention. With the right care, it will hold its beauty for years to come.
- Store with care. Keep your jewelry in the pouch or box provided. Store pieces separately to prevent scratching — never loosely tossed together.
- Protect from the elements. Avoid prolonged sunlight, extreme heat, and humidity. When not being worn, store in a cool, dark place.
- Last on, first off. Put your jewelry on afterapplying perfume, lotion, or sunscreen. Remove it before swimming, showering, or exercise. Chlorine and moisture can damage both gemstones and metal finishes.
- Clean gently. Natural stone beads can be wiped with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. For a deeper clean, use mild dish soap and warm water — then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth and allow to air dry completely, ensuring no moisture remains in the bead holes. Avoid harsh chemicals, soaps, or ultrasonic cleaners, especially for porous stones like Lapis Lazuli or Turquoise.
A jewelry cloth and protective pouch or box are included with every purchase.
